Your engineering team shipped 147 story points last sprint. Is that good? Nobody knows. Story points are made-up numbers calibrated to a team's internal sense of effort. They measure team consensus about difficulty, not actual productivity.
The Metrics That Mislead
Story Points
A team that inflates estimates ships more points. A team that takes on harder work ships fewer. Neither number tells you whether the team is productive.
Lines of Code
A developer who writes a 500-line brute-force solution contributed more LOC than one who writes a 20-line elegant solution. The second developer created more value.
PR Count
Splitting work into 10 small PRs vs. 2 large PRs changes the count but not the output. Teams optimizing for PR count create overhead without creating value.
